What is TRIAC Dimming?
Dimmers have fast become a vital part of many lighting applications and installations. Dimmers allow you to set the level of light and save energy on the output and when teamed with an LED light source, this energy saving can be quite substantial. Phase-cut dimmers are the most common dimming control and are often referred to as TRIAC dimmers. Creating the ideal configuration of LED lamps with the TRIAC dimmer has, in the past, been a challenge, but the introduction of new TRIAC dimming LED drivers has made this much simpler. TRIAC dimming controls act as a high-speed switch and are used to control the amount of electrical energy passing to a bulb. A ‘trigger’ dictates what point the device starts to conduct the electricity, essentially “chopping up” the voltage waveform, stopping the voltage from being supplied at full load. The quicker the switch reacts the more power is let through and the later it reacts, the less power, resulting in a dimming of the bulb. This is very similar to more common Thyristor dimmers, however TRIAC dimming is less likely to produce “half wave” on failure or Hz flicker and therefore the lifespan of the LED’s are not as greatly reduced as they are with Thyristor dimmers. When using a TRIAC dimmer with LED light solutions and sourcing a TRIAC dimming LED driver you need to ensure it is actually a TRIAC semiconductor device as TRIAC dimmers are designed for resistive loads, which LED solutions are not. If the correct TRIAC dimming led driver is not sourced the lights will not perform as expected with the TRIAC wall dimmer; resulting in LED’s not dimming or creating a Hz flicker which will shorten the life of the LED’s.

WHY USE A PHASE CUT (TRIAC DIMMABLE) LED DRIVER?
Phase cut LED drivers that can be used with leading edge (TRIAC) dimmers and leading edge dimmers that you find in most homes. This means that they are ideal if you are retrofitting LED lighting and want to be able to use the existing wiring and dimmer switches.They are also used in commercial retrofit projects. Most modern lighting control systems use either an analogue control signal, such as 1-10V, 0-10V or PWM to control the LED drivers, or the DALI lghting communications protocol. Typically, when installing LED lighting in a commercial project you will find that 0-10V, 1-10V, or DALI LED drivers are used. This sort of installation requires dedicated wiring to be run from the control systm to the LED driver, which means internal walls and ceilings need to be removed and replaced. With heritage sites it is not always possible to tear down walls and ceilings to run new wires. So, a solution that can work with existing wiring is required. Phase cut dimmable LED drivers are ideal because they don't require any dedicated wiring to be run to the LED driver. They can just be hooked up to the existiing wiring. If a DALI system is being used, then a simple DALI to trailing edge dimming converter can be installed.

Comparison of common dimming methods
