PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY (PDT) OR LED LIGHT THERAPY
Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT) or LED Phototherapy is a non-invasive rejuvenating skin treatment for areas of your skin that show signs of damage from aging, acne, certain skin cancers, sun damage, age spots and other causes. It allows you to target specific areas, and gives very effective results. PDT involves applying a topical medication to your skin, and then exposing it to a specific wavelength of light. This causes a reaction that eliminates abnormal skin cells and allows healthy cells to flourish (the term ‘photo dynamic’ refers to light sensitivity). LED Phototherapy is a painless, even relaxing skin-care treatment that plumps up aging skin by boosting collagen production and treats mild to moderate acne. LED treatments are sometimes also called LED light therapy, LED red light, LED blue light, or by the name of the manufacturer, such as Dermawave or Revitalight.


How is Blue Light Different than PDT?  Blue Light therapy and Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) are both effective therapies for the treatment of acne.  However, they are often confused with each other - and for good reason! Blue Light therapy and PDT both use a blue LED light as a major part of the treatment process.  So what is the difference between blue light therapy and PDT? Doctor explains that, "Many of our patients ask us 'how is blue light different than PDT?'  Once we understand how each treatment works, it helps our patients to understand the difference between the two treatments, and why we often recommend a series of treatments including both blue light therapy and PDT." Blue Light therapy utilizes a blue LED light, which is focused directly on the skin for a set amount of time.  Blue LED light is proven to be antibacterial and to reduce the acne-causing p. acnes bacteria on the skin.  Blue light therapy is sometimes combined with red light therapy, with decreases inflammation on the skin. Photodynamic Therapy, or PDT, uses blue LED light in a different way.  A light-sensitizing medication, called aminolevulinic acid, is applied to the skin and allowed to absorb into the follicles.  The blue LED light is then used to activate the medication.  This process not only kills the acne-causing bacteria, but it decreases excess sebum (oil) production on the skin.  PDT is one of the few acne treatments that can actually decrease the activity of the sebaceous glands (the oil producing glands.)

LED device could advance photodynamic therapy for skin cancer

Scientists at UC Irvine are exploring new ways to image cancerous lesions using LEDs that might enhance photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatments for cancer. 
         
 

 

In PDT, photosensitizing chemicals that absorb light are injected into a tumor, which is then exposed to light. The chemicals generate oxygen radicals from the light energy, destroying the cancer cells. PDT is currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of esophageal and lung cancer.

 
 

LUMSAIL LED Phototherapy is a completely non invasive treatment designed to help with problem skin, pigmentation and especially effective for clients who suffer with acne or spot prone skin.  The treatment itself is quick, (20 mins), safe, painless and doesn’t require any downtime for recovery.    Rolf Saager, who works in the lab of Anthony Durkin at the Beckman Laser Institute at UC Irvine in collaboration with Kristen Kelly, M.D., and Modulated Imaging, believes that PDT could also be used to treat skin cancer. But one obstacle to this application is the lack of a detailed imaging technique to target and monitor the effectiveness of PDT. Exploiting a technique known as spatial frequency domain imaging, the team has designed a new device with an array of five different colors of LEDs that illuminates skin with distinct intensity patterns. These patterns can change depending on the structure of the tissue and the pigments in the skin. With appropriate models of light propagation, the resulting images reveal the biochemistry of the tissue. "Through this imaging modality, it is now possible to assess how the therapeutic light will travel throughout the affected tissue, quantify the drug present within the lesion and monitor its efficacy during treatment," says Saager.

 To evaluate this spatial frequency domain imaging system, the scientists imaged a small population of skin cancers prior to treatment to characterize the variability among subjects and within the lesions themselves. The process took 5-10 seconds and produced images with a resolution of 30 microns, revealing spatially resolved maps of the optical properties of the lesions, tissue oxygenation and quantitative distribution of the photosensitizing drug. The talk, "A LED Based Spatial Frequency Domain Imaging System for Optimization of Photodynamic Therapy of Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)," will be presented at FiO at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 26.
