Transformer failures will show some obvious phenomena, this article lists some of the more common phenomena.

Transformer Failure Will Make Abnormal Noise

1. When the sound from the transformer is loud and noisy, it may be caused by its core. Like the clip or the screw clamping the transformer is loose.

2. If the noise is mixed with the sound of water boiling, like the escaped bubbles rumbling, there may be a catastrophic failure in the winding which makes the parts nearby heat seriously and the oil gasify. This noise can also be caused by the poor contact of tap switch which makes partial severe overheating or shorted-turn fault. At this time, the transformer failure needs to be stopped and repaired.

3. When you hear a continuous and regular crashing noise or grinding noise from the transformer, the reason for the noise may be the electrostatic discharge or the mechanical contact of some components caused by the core vibration. Although such noise is unusual, the harm for transformer working is slight and it is not necessary to make it stop running immediately. This transformer failure can be excluded during planned maintenance.

Transformer Failure Can Cause Temperature Anomaly

When the transformer is under the condition that the load, heat-dissipating, environment temperature remain unchanged, its temperature rises with an upward trend while it is under the condition as same as the original. The reasons what may cause this problem are as below:

1. Layer short, interturn short circuit and interstand short circuit.

2. Partial short circuit of transformer core.

3. Fuel tank and cover heat up caused by leakage leak or eddy.

4. Long-term overload operation and accident overload.

5. Deterioration of thermal conditions.

Transformer Failure Caused By Circuitry Inrush Current

Inrush circuit ( or circuitry interference) is at the top of the factors causing the transformer fault. The abnormal phenomena includes closing over voltage, voltage peak and line fault, etc.

Bad Manufacturing Technology Leads To Transformer Failure

Loose or unstayed terminals, loose block, rack of fusion, poorly insulated cores, insufficient anti-short circuit.

Insulation Ageing

The transformer has been working in the power above that in the nameplate for a long time will lead to the problem of overload and excessive temperature and result in the premature aging of insulation ultimately. When the insulation cardboard of transformer is ageing, the strength of paper will be reduced. Therefore, the influence of external faults may cause insulation damage, which in turn may cause transformer failure.
