The European Union's European Marine and fisheries fund (EMFF) has said it will support the Fresher project, which aims to improve floating photovoltaic technology.

The two-year project, which aims to improve anchoring and mooring technology, particularly for Marine facilities, was launched this month by a Swedish, Spanish and Portuguese consortium active in floating pv.Proponents of the project hope that technological advances will reduce the cost of generating electricity from floating projects while increasing the capacity of such facilities.

The project partners did not say how much the European Union would fund the project.

Portugal's state-owned electricity company EDP has also joined the Fresher consortium. In Portugal alone, floating photovoltaic potential exceeds 2GW, according to the mooring equipment group.

EDP announced a megawatt floating project in June and built the first smaller system with Ciel&Terre in November 2016.

The power company's new strategy includes investing in solar, energy storage, off-grid and hybrid wind projects, as well as expanding the wind sector's traditional renewable assets.
