Under the guidance of the supreme interests of the United States, on November 4, the United States officially notified the United Nations environment program to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.In the face of the world's biggest villain, how can the UN achieve its goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C instead of 2°C?The environment agency made ten recommendations.
1. Increase solar power generation by more than 10 times to 5 TW and wind power generation by 5 times to 3 TW by 2030, which will meet 50% of the annual global electricity consumption;
2. A 50-fold increase in the number of batteries needed to produce 50 million electric cars a year by 2030, and more energy storage solutions to accommodate the growth of solar and wind power;
3. Invest more than $1.5 trillion annually by 2030 in the expansion and reinforcement of power grids, including ultra-high voltage transmission networks and broad demand response solutions;
4. Faster reductions in global energy intensity (energy consumption per unit of output) are needed by 2030, to 3.5 per cent a year, from about 2.5 per cent we currently expect;
5. Better and cheaper heat pump technology and improved heat insulation performance;
6. Create a large number of new electric vehicle charging infrastructure;
7. Rapid and wider deployment of carbon capture, utilization and sequestration facilities;
8. Increase the use of green hydrogen and the surplus renewable energy generation in the grid for building heating, industry and fuel transportation;
9. For the heavy industry sector: increase the degree of electrification of the manufacturing process, including electric heating.Combination of renewable energy self-use and energy storage solutions;
10. Extensive railway expansion for urban commutes, long-distance passenger and freight transport;
As the United States withdraws from the Paris climate agreement and plans to tap more natural gas, starting today, while we can generate electricity from renewable sources, we won't be able to meet the 2°C target, let alone 1.5°C, if we rely on just a little renewable energy.To meet the 2°C target, scientists think that energy intensity needs to be reduced by 4.8% a year, which is hardly realistic.
If the world is to avoid global warming, policy must deal with at least three things at once: greater energy efficiency, more renewable energy and industrial-scale CCS.There are all kinds of technologies and possibilities other than renewable energy for electricity generation, even saying that everyone should try to consume less energy.
The hope is that these technologies will actually reduce the emissions gap to well below 2°C!
